Things to do in Loango National Park
And where to stay, the best time to visit, what a day costs, and the traps to skip.
Best time to visit Loango National Park
• a note or something on ✦ an occasion worth the trip
Long dry season, firmest tracks and the humpback whale season, peaking mid July to mid September.
Short dry season, leatherback nesting under way and beach wildlife reported most across November to April.
Long rains, the gorilla and northern park window in operator guidance, with heavy rain and difficult tracks.
Short rains, turtles return and fishing opens, with the least predictable road transfers of the year.
What's on
- Independence Day 17 August
Gabonese public holiday, when Libreville hotels and domestic flights fill.
- Christmas and New Year holidays 25 December to 1 January
Peak period for the few Loango rooms that exist, in turtle season, book months ahead.
Best things to do in Loango National Park
Iguela Lagoon
The core boat safari: mangrove channels, hippos, crocodiles and forest birds, and often the transfer route itself.
Loango National Park
Savanna and beach game drives for forest elephants, buffalo and red river hogs where forest opens onto an empty coast.
Loango Gorilla Project, Yatouga
Tracking the Atananga group with project trackers, very small groups, about an hour if the group is found and settles.
Projet Gorilles Fernan Vaz
A rehabilitation visit with orphaned gorillas on an island site, a certain sighting that is a sanctuary, not a wild trek.
Where to stay in Loango National Park
Iguela and Louri circuit, northern Loango
classic Loango stay, lagoon, beach and gorilla access
Reached via Port-Gentil and the Iguela Lagoon, with the hub lodge and the tented and satellite camps.
Sette Cama, southern boundary
fishing and the southern park
A separate stay on the Ndogo Lagoon with its own route via Gamba, not a short hop from the Iguela camps.
Omboue
gateway night and the lowest cost roof near the park
The lagoon town outside the park, simple and cash based, with park access still to pay for separately.
Libreville
staging nights before and after the park
International flights land here and the domestic flight leaves in the morning, so every Loango trip sleeps here first.
Think twice about
- Libreville beaches at night
Crime is common in Libreville. Avoid quiet or isolated beaches around the city and beaches generally after dusk.
- Loango beaches, for swimming
Surf and currents, sharks in the surf zone and hippos and crocodiles at river and lagoon mouths. Loango beach time is walking time.
- Libreville to Port-Gentil by road
There is no visitor road between the two cities. Travel by domestic flight, organised boat or ferry, in daylight where possible.
- The park interior without an operator or guide
Unsigned tracks, high access charges, cash only payments and forest wildlife at close range make independent entry unrealistic and unsafe.
Best restaurants in Loango National Park
Hotel Olako
Simple hotel meals in the gateway town, grilled fish and staples, valuable because the next kitchen is a lodge.
Olatano
All day dining at the Radisson Blu, international and local buffet, the reliable staging night dinner.
Amaya by Vanny's Shalimar
Indian dining inside the Radisson Blu, the alternative staging dinner and the stronger vegetarian choice.
Outdoor things to do in Loango National Park
Pointe Sainte-Catherine Beach
A guided walk on an empty Atlantic beach used by elephants and buffalo, with turtle tracks in season.
Leatherback Turtle Night Walk
A guided night walk in nesting season to watch leatherbacks ashore, under red light and distance discipline.
Humpback Whale Watching, Loango Coast
A seasonal boat trip for breeding humpbacks offshore, peak mid July to mid September, never guaranteed in September.
Sette Cama Sport Fishing
Expert lagoon and surf fishing for tarpon, threadfin and cubera, a dedicated expedition in its own right.
Akaka River
Kayak and small boat travel on a forest river, with dry season meadows, elephants, buffalo and dense birdlife.
Best hotels in Loango National Park
Loango Lodge
The flagship hub lodge on the Iguela Lagoon, full board, from which the satellite camp circuit was run.
Louri Camp
A small tented camp on platforms over the Louri Lagoon, the multi night heart of current Loango itineraries.
Ndola Camp
The arrival and departure tented camp at the lagoon mouth, breaking the long Port-Gentil transfer.
Akaka Bush Camp
The remote forest satellite camp for the Akaka River, reached by a long boat journey from the Iguela side.
Tassi Savannah Camp
The savanna satellite of the lodge circuit, for open country, grazing herds and elephants moving to the beach.
Sette Cama Camp
Chalets with a deck over the Ndogo estuary, the southern base for fishing, walking trails and wildlife stays.
Hotel Olako
The simple gateway hotel in Omboue, the cheapest roof near the park, buying no park access by itself.
Radisson Blu Okoume Palace Hotel, Libreville
Libreville's full service beachfront staging hotel, a short drive from the airport, before a morning flight out.

- Quotes excluding domestic flights, boats, park charges or the gorilla permit.
- Any operator guaranteeing surfing hippos, a gorilla sighting or a September whale.
