Things to do in Lifou
And where to stay, the best time to visit, what a day costs, and the traps to skip.
Best time to visit Lifou
• a note or something on ✦ an occasion worth the trip
Dry season, the reliable window: cooler, calmer seas, best snorkelling and caves. July and August are peak and book out.
Whale season: humpbacks pass Lifou and are watched from the Jokin cliff top, best in August and September.
Wet and cyclone season: hotter and humid, wettest roughly January to March, with flight, ferry, cave and snorkelling disruption possible.
What's on
- Our Lady of Lourdes celebration, Easo 8 December
The annual celebration at the Chapel of Our Lady of Lourdes above Easo, early in the wet season.
- We Market Wednesdays and Fridays, year round
The island's weekly market fixture in the centre of We: garden produce, cooked food, flowers and craft.

Where to stay in Lifou
We and Chateaubriand Bay
services, the market, arrival ease
The main settlement, shops, bank and pharmacy, with the Drehu Village Hotel on the bay and small hotels nearby.
Easo, Jokin and the north-west
the cruise coast without the cruise, cliffs, Jinek Bay
Santal Bay, Jinek Bay and the road north to the Jokin cliffs, with gites trading on cliff and lagoon position.
Luengoni, Mou and the south-east
the best beach, the caves, the resort
Luengoni beach and caves, Kiki Beach and the Xodre cliffs, and the Wadra Bay Hotel, with no town services.
Think twice about
- Easo tender pier area on cruise ship days
Not a safety warning: it fills with day visitors, stalls and tour buses for 6 to 8 hours. Staying visitors should use it early or late, or choose another beach.
- Tribal land, caves and swimming spots without permission
Almost all Lifou land is customary. Entering a village, cave, cliff stair or beach without greeting, asking and paying any named fee is a breach of coutume, and closed places stay closed.
- Cliff edges and reef rock at Jokin and Xodre
High, unfenced and undercut limestone above deep water, with no lifeguards and slow help. Swim only at guided lagoon access points.

Is Lifou safe?
- No beach is lifeguarded. Snorkel inside sheltered bays with a buddy, wear a rash guard at Jinek where sunscreen is barred, and clean coral cuts at once.
- Medical care is basic in We and serious cases are evacuated to Noumea, weather permitting. Insurance covering medical evacuation is essential.
- Water comes from rain and a fragile lens. Ask your host about drinking water at your stay and conserve it.
Lifou travel tips: tourist traps to skip
- The Wadra Bay property still circulates under its old InterContinental name with old prices. Confirm the operator and rate direct before paying.
- Cruise pier prices at Easo are set for a captive day audience. Buy vanilla and craft at the source or the We market instead.
Getting around Lifou: public transport and more
- Fly Air Caledonie from Noumea Magenta to Lifou Ouanaham, about 40 minutes, or sail Betico 2 from Noumea in roughly 4 to 5 hours on limited weekly sailings.
- Rent a car and book it with the room in season, or pre-book every transfer with your host. There is no bus network, rideshare or taxi fleet.
