Things to do in Lake Garda
And where to stay, the best time to visit, what a day costs, and the traps to skip.
Best time to visit Lake Garda
• a note or something on ✦ an occasion worth the trip
Best months: warm water by June, everything open, ferries on full schedule, gardens at their best.
September stays warm with thinner crowds; harvest menus begin.
Peak: hot, crowded, expensive. Morning sights, afternoon swims, booked dinners.
Still good and quieter; some hotels start closing mid-month.
Many lakefront hotels and restaurants close; grey and quiet. Fine for a cheap walking weekend, not the summer Garda.

Is Lake Garda safe?
- Lake Garda is a low-crime area; the issues are the usual tourist ones: pickpockets in the Sirmione and ferry crowds in August, and bag theft from cars at trailhead car parks. Lock the car, take valuables, swim only where others swim. Emergency: 112.
Lake Garda travel tips: tourist traps to skip
- Restaurants with photo menus and touts on the Sirmione castle square and the Limone promenade: eat two streets back or book the named places.
- Lake fish at the cheapest lakefront places is often not from the lake; the restaurants here that serve real lake fish say so on the menu.
- The Gardaland corridor sold as Lake Garda: a theme-park stay, not a lake stay.
- Parking near the old towns in season without checking ZTL boundaries; fines are automatic and arrive months later.
Getting around Lake Garda: public transport and more
- The ferry network is the pleasure transport: slow boats link the main towns and fast services cut crossing times. Check the last sailing.
- A car is practical for the western shore, Monte Baldo and the mountain lakes, but a liability inside Sirmione, Limone and Malcesine old towns.
- Desenzano and Peschiera have the train stations, with direct trains to Milan, Verona and Venice.
- Cycling is serious here: lakeside paths are flat and tourist offices rent e-bikes for the climbs to Tenno and Tremosine.
