The rift viewpoint on the road in, where the layered volcanic ground explains the lake, the lava and the bay.

Think twice about
- Lake Assal as an overnight base
There is no hotel, lodge or camp at the lake. Any product selling a night at Lake Assal itself should not be trusted.
- Ghoubbet al-Kharab water
The bay channel has violent currents. It is a viewpoint stop on the Assal day, never a swimming stop.
- Djibouti-Eritrea border region
Do not travel to the Djibouti-Eritrea border region. Lake Assal is well away from it; do not detour north.

- Never enter the Ghoubbet water, and never photograph military installations, checkpoints or port security.
Lake Assal travel tips: tourist traps to skip
- Paying a private solo price without asking about shared departures, when the vehicle is the main cost of the day.
- Planning to swim in the Ghoubbet, eat at the lake, or sleep at the lake. None of those products exist.
- Scheduling the lake for midday from May to September. In this basin that is unsafe, not ambitious.
Getting around Lake Assal: public transport and more
- Go with an operator 4x4 or SUV and driver from Djibouti City, leave at dawn, and confirm the air conditioning works before departure.
- Expect no reliable phone signal for stretches of the road and at the lake. A silent day is the plan working.
- Carry DJF cash in small notes. There is no ATM, card payment or money changing between the capital and the lake.
