Best time to visit Kolsai Lakes
• a note or something on ✦ an occasion worth the trip
Season opens unevenly. First lake accessible, but snow and mud can still close the second lake trail and the Kaindy track.
Hiking season proper begins, trails dry and horses work regularly. One of the two best windows of the year.
Peak season. Warmest weather, boats, yurts and camping in full operation, and the busiest weekends of the year.
Crowds fall, golden light and early forest colour, trails usually still open. Rivals June as the best window.
Wind-down. Clear cold days are possible, but snow can close the upper trail at any point and guesthouses begin shutting.
Winter. Upper trails snowbound and closed to ordinary hiking, Kaindy track impassable for periods, most tourism services dormant.

Kolsai Lakes travel tips: tourist traps to skip
- One day tours promising Charyn, Kaindy and both Kolsai lakes deliver photo stops, not time on any trail.
- Confirm a Saty taxi takes you to the first lake parking, not only to the park gate 8 km short of the lake.
- Refuse any offer of the third lake or a cross-border crossing into Kyrgyzstan.
Getting around Kolsai Lakes: public transport and more
- Almaty to Saty is about 280 to 300 km and 5 to 6 hours by car, then 12 to 15 km to Kolsai-1 and a hired 4x4 for Kaindy.
- There is no useful public transport inside the park. Walking and horses are the transport between the lakes.
- Download offline maps in Almaty, as mobile signal is patchy in the valleys.
