Things to do in Kololi
And where to stay, the best time to visit, what a day costs, and the traps to skip.
Best time to visit Kololi
• a note or something on ✦ an occasion worth the trip
Prime dry season: everything open, strip at its liveliest, peak birding at Kotu Creek, coolest evenings.
Hot shoulder season: prices soften after Easter, crowds thin, some venues reduce days.
Rainy season: heavy rain, flooding on lanes, mosquitoes at their worst and much of the strip closed or reduced.
What's on
- Kartong Festival usually February
Community festival of music, drumming, dance and workshops in Kartong, about 45 minutes south. Dates vary, confirm before booking.
- Independence Day 18 February
National holiday with main ceremonies in Banjul and a festive beach weekend in Kololi.
- International Roots Festival historically May, irregular
Diaspora homecoming festival centred on the Roots story. Runs irregularly, treat as a bonus, never a booking pick.
- Christmas and New Year on the strip late December
Kololi's commercial peak: gala nights at the resorts and the year's highest prices. Book earliest of all.

Dense cluster of stalls by the strip for carvings, batik, drums and jewellery, with good humoured haggling.
Where to stay in Kololi

Every restaurant, bar and the craft market on foot, at the cost of strip noise and the most persistent seller approaches.

Think twice about
- Kololi Beach after dark
Do not walk alone on beaches after dark. Use the lit strip and taxi back to your hotel.

Pavements are broken and lanes one street back from the strip are poorly lit. Walk by day and taxi at night, even short hops.
- Southern border area near Casamance
Sporadic fighting and past risk along the southern border with Senegal's Casamance region. Stay on main roads and do not travel there at night.
