Things to do in Kaunas
And where to stay, the best time to visit, what a day costs, and the traps to skip.
Best time to visit Kaunas
• a note or something on ✦ an occasion worth the trip
The sweet spot: facades in fresh leaf, terraces open, Jazz and City Day energy, prices below July peak.
Warmest months, Pazaislis and Operetta in full flow, swimming and kayaking live; book dinners and balloons ahead.
Connoisseur month: golden Azuolynas, students back, Biennial in odd years, empty museums.
Shoulder improving, Kaunas Jazz in late April; general sightseers do better from April onward.
A shoulder gamble: longer days, no weather guarantees.
The honest worst month: dark by late afternoon, rain on cobbles, Rumsiskes interiors closed, festivals thin.
Redeemed by Town Hall Square Christmas tree and market and lights on Laisves Aleja, smaller than Vilnius.
Properly cold, 0 to minus 10 C normal; modernism photographs well in bare tree light and Uzgavenes falls in February.

Is Kaunas safe?
- Petty theft around crowded transport, markets and nightlife is the main tourist crime; keep bags closed in crowds.
- Choose your own bar, watch your drink and tab, and never follow a stranger invitation to an unknown venue.
- Derby nights are loud and good natured; leave with the crowd via the island bridges.
- Winter ice on cobbles and on Zaliakalnis and Aleksotas slopes makes footwear matter. Emergency number is 112.
- Tap water is drinkable and English is widely spoken by younger residents and visitor businesses.
Kaunas travel tips: tourist traps to skip
- Kaunas Castle interior is small; pay happily, expect little, and enjoy the park and confluence a lot.
- Akropolis Kaunas is a large generic shopping centre, never a substitute for the Old Town.
- Devil's Museum disappoints visitors expecting horror or interactivity; go expecting a folk art collection.
- A Kaunas day trip from Vilnius and back for dinner wastes the modernism, Zalgiris and Pazaislis.
- Station area central hotel savings cost more in first evening mood than the 10 EUR saved.
- Shop around two or three Old Town shops before buying a major amber piece and check if it is pressed amber.
Getting around Kaunas: public transport and more
- Walk first: Old Town to the east end of Laisves Aleja is about 30 minutes on foot.
- Use the Ziogas app for buses and trolleybuses, about 0.70 EUR in the app versus 1.50 EUR cash to the driver.
- Bolt is the default for the airport, Pazaislis, Ninth Fort returns and any night journey.
- Airport bus 29 or 29E runs to the centre in about 30 to 45 minutes; Bolt takes about 20 to 30 minutes.
- Trains to Vilnius take about 1 hour 5 minutes to 1 hour 30 minutes from about 8 EUR.
- Rent a car only if Rumsiskes, Pazaislis, Birštonas or Trakai in one loop, or golf, is the plan.
