And where to stay, the best time to visit, what a day costs, and the traps to skip.
Best time to visit Ifrane
• a note or something on ✦ an occasion worth the trip
Winter peak in Ifrane: snow on roofs, below freezing nights, skiing only when snow and the Djebli lift allow.
Best all round walking season: meltwater at Ain Vittel, blossom, daytime highs climbing to around 20 C.
Cool summer escape at its liveliest and priciest, with Ahidous in July and the Ifrane festival in August.
Quiet autumn sweet spot: colour in the poplars, pleasant highs, lower prices and shorter restaurant hours.
Cold and wet turn, first snow possible late in the month, many summer services winding down.

- Stay alert in tourist locations, and watch for petty crime around macaque stops and busy souks.
- Avoid demonstrations and large gatherings, and follow local authorities.
- Emergency numbers: police 190, ambulance and fire 150, Royal Gendarmerie 177 outside towns.
- Winter roads can be icy or snow closed: start early, check conditions locally and turn back in heavy snow.
Ifrane travel tips: tourist traps to skip
- Building a ski holiday on Michlifen alone: skiing is tiny, snow dependent and the historic lift no longer runs.
- Counting on Lake Dayet Aoua holding water or boats being available after drought years: check levels in town first.
- Feeding or holding food out to Barbary macaques at Gouraud, which teaches snatching and can end in a bite.
Getting around Ifrane: public transport and more
- Walk the centre. Take petit taxis in town and grand taxis or a hotel driver for Azrou, Gouraud, Ain Leuh and the lakes.
- No train station or airport in Ifrane: ONCF train or a flight to Fez, then bus, grand taxi or rental car for the 60 to 65 km road leg.
- Al Boraq high speed trains serve Tangier to Casablanca via Rabat and do not serve the Middle Atlas or Ifrane.
