Things to do in Harbour Island
And where to stay, the best time to visit, what a day costs, and the traps to skip.
Best time to visit Harbour Island
• a note or something on ✦ an occasion worth the trip
High season and best months overall: driest, everything open, priciest, with Atlantic swell most likely in January and February.
Shoulder sweet spot: warm sea, thinning crowds, easing rates and almost everything still open.
Hot, humid summer with the warmest sea, Goombay festivities, afternoon storms and hurricane season open.
Worst months for a first trip: hurricane peak, hottest and most humid, with some hotels and restaurants closed. Late November recovers fast.
What's on
- Eleuthera Pineapple Festival early June, 5-6 June for the 36th edition
In Gregory Town, an easy Eleuthera day trip, with a Junkanoo parade, pineapple food and drinks and live music.
- Junkanoo 26 December and 1 January
Rush outs around Boxing Day and New Year's Day, the Bahamas' great cultural spectacle, at peak prices and minimum stays.
- Goombay Summer Festival July to August
Weekly summer festival nights across the Bahamas in season, with Friday fish fries at full tilt.
Best things to do in Harbour Island
Pink Sand Beach
Three miles of pale rose sand with reef sheltered swimming, most pink at sunrise and late afternoon.
Dunmore Town
Compact grid of pastel Loyalist cottages, picket fences and harbour lanes, best walked in the morning.
Loyalist Cottage
Among the island's oldest houses, part of the c.1797 era streetscape in the centre of town.
Sir George W. K. Roberts Public Library
The pink public library building is a small landmark stop on a walk through Dunmore Town.
Uncle Ralph's Corner
A resident favourite corner with a licence plate wall built up from visiting boats and carts.
Lone Tree
A storm washed driftwood tree anchored upright on the sandbar west of Government Dock, best at low tide.
Government Dock
The free way to do the harbour sunset ritual, watching the sun drop over North Eleuthera with everyone else.
Briland Animal Rescue
Small local rescue where visitors socialise potcake puppies and kittens and their time genuinely helps.
Where to stay in Harbour Island
Pink Sand Beach side
best overall base, beach first trips
On the beach for sunrise and in a lounger by nine, still a short walk or cart ride to Bay Street dinners.
Dunmore Town / Bay Street
food, value and atmosphere
Sunsets, the dock, the fish fry and morning coffee without a cart, plus a short uphill walk to the beach.
Valentines / Romora Bay / marina side
boaters, divers and families wanting a full service resort
Marina slips, the dive centre, larger units with kitchens and pools, a few minutes by cart from town and beach.
The Narrows / north end and south end
house rentals and quiet
Maximum space, privacy and local feel in private houses, with minimum walkability and a cart essential.
Think twice about
- Immediately around Government Dock
Noisy, cart choked and commercial at ferry and water taxi peaks. Fine for a night, wearing for a week.
- Unlit lanes at the far north and south ends without a golf cart
Walking home in the dark on sandy, blind corner roads shared with carts is a road safety issue.
- Gregory Town / Glass Window area as a base
You would commute by boat and car daily for a Harbour Island trip, for no benefit.

Is Harbour Island safe?
- Violent crime is rare and this is one of the safer visitor islands in the Bahamas.
- Golf cart crashes on narrow, sandy, blind corner roads are the main risk. Slow down, especially at night.
- No-see-ums bite at dusk near beach and mangroves. Repellent at sunset is not optional.
- Medical care is a clinic, not a hospital. Serious cases mean evacuation, so take insurance with medical evacuation cover.
Harbour Island travel tips: tourist traps to skip
- Saturated pink sand photos. The sand is blush, not bubblegum, and looks near white at noon.
- Cheap Harbour Island content. There is no hostel, campground or sub 100 dollar room on the island.
- Bargain multi stop pig megatours and any golf included package. Neither product exists in a good version here.
- Do not drink city tap water. Use reverse osmosis or bottled water and ask your host what the house runs on.
- Many kitchens add about 15 percent gratuity automatically. Read the bill before tipping twice.
Getting around Harbour Island: public transport and more
- Fly to North Eleuthera (ELH), taxi about five minutes to Three Island Dock, then a roughly ten minute water taxi.
- No rental cars on the island. Golf carts are the system at 60 to 120 dollars a day, drive on the left, and book ahead in season.
- Walk or bike whenever you can. The island is small enough that a cart is a convenience, not a necessity.
- Bahamian dollar equals the US dollar and US dollars are accepted, but bring cash, as ATMs are unreliable and some spots are cash only.
