- Book the domestic flight, the room and licensed whale boats months ahead for August and September, in that order.
- A full whale swim day costs about TOP 400 to 700, with Ha'apai the cheapest island group, and multi day packages reduce the daily rate.
Is Ha'apai safe?
- The real risks are ocean currents, cyclones from November to April and limited medical facilities on outer islands.
- Do not walk alone after dark or in isolated areas, and use your accommodation's private beach or go in a group on public beaches.
- Be honest with whale and dive guides about swimming ability, since whale swimmers must swim unaided for about 200 metres in open water.
Ha'apai travel tips: tourist traps to skip
- Paying an unlicensed operator for a whale swim, which is illegal and can bring heavy fines.
- Assuming a Sunday arrival will have open shops, restaurants, flights or transfers, when almost everything closes by law.
- Trusting any printed ferry or flight timetable, or planning a Ha'apai trip around Fafa Island Resort, which is off Tongatapu and listed as permanently closed.
Getting around Ha'apai: public transport and more
- Fly Tongatapu to Salote Pilolevu Airport on Lifuka with Lulutai Airlines, about 40 to 55 minutes when it runs, and keep at least two buffer nights on Tongatapu before an international flight.
- The ferry from Nuku'alofa to Pangai runs about once a week and takes about 12 to 16 hours overnight, with schedules confirmed locally, so never use it before an international flight.
- Lifuka and Foa are joined by a causeway and are flat and easy by bicycle, and Uoleva is about 15 minutes by boat from Lifuka through your accommodation.
