Things to do in Great Zimbabwe
And where to stay, the best time to visit, what a day costs, and the traps to skip.
Best time to visit Great Zimbabwe
• a note or something on ✦ an occasion worth the trip
Dry season, the main season: dry ruins, best roads, and Kyle game concentrating as the bush thins, with cold nights in June and July.
Peak dry heat: best Kyle game viewing and the lowest lake shoreline, but hot afternoons on the exposed granite of the ruins.
Green and rainy season: emerald hills, a full lake and peak birding, but muddy Kyle tracks, dispersed game and the highest malaria risk.
Shoulder: some green left, falling rain, cooler nights and few visitors, the photographers pick for the ruins.
What's on
- Independence Day 18 April
A national public holiday: the monument stays open, buses and roads fill, and the ruins draw Zimbabwean families.

Great Zimbabwe Museum
The site museum holding the soapstone Zimbabwe Birds and the trade finds that prove the city traded as far as China and Persia.
Shona Village
A cultural village at the monument with pottery, basket making, music and dance, turning the ruin back into a living culture.
Great Zimbabwe National Monument
The guided version of the monument: a site guide hired at the gate turns walls with no panels into the story of a city.

| Budget | $45 a person |
|---|---|
| Classic | $110 a person |
| Splurge | $220 a person |
A day of food, drink, sights and getting around, before the room
What to book ahead
- Lake Mutirikwi Recreational Park: a few days ahead
- Lodge at the Ancient City: a few days ahead
- The small ruins lodges can fill on Zimbabwean holiday weekends and school holidays, so book those days to weeks ahead and confirm directly.
- Confirm Kyle activities, horse rides, rhino trails and boating, through ZimParks or your lodge before relying on them.
Is Great Zimbabwe safe?
- Walk Masvingo town centre by day, not alone after dark, use guarded parking and keep car doors locked and valuables out of sight.
- The Masvingo lowveld and the lake are a malaria risk, higher in the wet months: take medical advice, use repellent and cover up at dusk.
- Carry US dollar cash for any private medical payment, and hold insurance with medical evacuation cover, as serious care means Harare.
Great Zimbabwe travel tips: tourist traps to skip
- Planning a ruins visit around a card machine or an ATM: carry US dollar cash in small notes for the gate, guides and the park.
- Skipping the Valley Ruins and the museum and seeing only the Great Enclosure wall: the city and its story are in the other two stops.
- Self guiding without reading anything first: there are few or no information panels inside the monument.
Getting around Great Zimbabwe: public transport and more
- Harare to Masvingo is roughly 3.5 to 4 hours by road in daylight, and Masvingo town to the monument is about 30 km, roughly half an hour.
- A Harare day trip runs 12 to 13 hours door to door for a rushed monument visit, so sleep at the ruins or in Masvingo for at least one night.
- Buses run Harare to Masvingo and leave when full, then take a local taxi or a lodge transfer for the last 30 km to the gate.
- Do not drive the Harare road or the lake roads after dark.
