Best time to visit Fouta Djallon
• a note or something on ✦ an occasion worth the trip
Cool dry season, the trekking window: passable tracks, clear rivers, warm days and cold nights in Dalaba and Labe.
Hot dry season: still trekable, severe midday canyon heat, falls at their lowest late in the period, walk at dawn.
Rains: green country and the most powerful falls, but dirt tracks can be impassable, routes close and malaria is highest.

Think twice about
- Conakry demonstration and crowd areas, and any election-period gathering
Protests can turn violent without warning and election periods can bring movement restrictions.
- All intercity roads at night, including the Conakry to Mamou to Labe corridor
Robberies by criminals posing as police or military at night and hold-ups on the Mamou road are reported. Travel in daylight only.
- Falls approaches and river crossings in heavy rain without a local guide
Dirt tracks become impassable, rivers rise fast and wet rock at Kinkon, Kambadaga and Ditinn is dangerous without local judgement.
- The Mali border area around Mount Loura without a same-day local check
Mount Loura sits near the Senegal and Mali borders in the Massif de Tamgue. Check conditions locally that day before climbing.

Is Fouta Djallon safe?
- Street crime, night road robbery by criminals posing as police or military, and hold-ups on the Mamou road are the standing risks. Travel in daylight only, with a reputable driver.
- There are no emergency services in Guinea. Serious care means evacuation to Europe, so insure for it.
- Malaria risk is year-round including in the highlands. Take prophylaxis as advised and treat any fever as urgent.
- Cash only in the Fouta in GNF. Cards and ATMs outside Conakry are not a plan.
- Very little English is spoken. Travellers without French should budget for a French-speaking guide.
Fouta Djallon travel tips: tourist traps to skip
- Listings outlive businesses in the Fouta. Confirm every pick is operating that week through a hotel or guide.
- A trek quote excluding village contributions, camp food or the return leg is not the full price.
- A Conakry to Labe road time quoted under eight hours is a sales line, not a plan.
- Large GNF notes cannot be changed at markets, motos or falls tracks. Carry small notes.
Getting around Fouta Djallon: public transport and more
- Road only from Conakry: about 414 km via Kindia and Mamou, a full daylight day of 10 to 14 hours in a private 4x4, longer by sept-place.
- Use motorcycle taxis for short town hops with the price agreed first, and a hired 4x4 with a local driver for falls and trek starts.
- Break the Conakry journey in Mamou or Dalaba if you can. Never travel intercity roads at night.
