And where to stay, the best time to visit, what a day costs, and the traps to skip.
Best time to visit Foggia
• a note or something on ✦ an occasion worth the trip
Best months, warm not brutal, Gargano and Tremiti open, sea swimmable from June to early October.
Good month with the Incoronata feast at the end of April, though the sea is still cold.
Extreme heat in the city and peak crowds on the coast, justified mainly by the mid August patronal feast.
Cold, grey and windy on the plain, with the Gargano largely shut and Tremiti ferries minimal.
Quiet and good for food and cathedrals, with Orsara bonfire night on 1 November and short days.

Foggia travel tips: tourist traps to skip
- Staying only in Foggia instead of using it as a base for Lucera, Troia, Siponto and the Gargano.
- August in the city, when extreme heat empties Foggia while the coast fills up.
- Expecting a pretty old town, when heavy 1943 bombing left a mixture of surviving Baroque and post war concrete.
- Rushing the Manfredonia to Vieste coast road, which is spectacular, slow and full of coaches and cyclists.
Getting around Foggia: public transport and more
- Walk the flat centre. Everything in town except Passo di Corvo and the Incoronata is walkable.
- Drive the province. Gargano roads are winding and slow, so allow 70 to 90 minutes to Vieste.
- Foggia station has fast trains from Rome in about 3 hours and Bari in about 1 hour 15 minutes.
- Bari Palese is the practical airport, about 130 km away, as Foggia airport has only limited services.
