Things to do in Failaka Island
And where to stay, the best time to visit, what a day costs, and the traps to skip.
Best time to visit Failaka Island
• a note or something on ✦ an occasion worth the trip
Best weather for ruins, cycling, riding and beach time, peaking and busiest in February.
Warm shoulder months. Early boat, archaeology first, pool at midday, dust risk in April.
Heat builds past 40C and outdoor plans shrink to mornings.
Avoid. Highs routinely above 45C and the pool is close to the only functioning activity.
What's on
- Hala February and National and Liberation Days February, culminating 25-26 February
Mainland national celebrations make Failaka ferries and packages their busiest. Book weeks ahead.
Best things to do in Failaka Island
Ikaros Archaeological Site
Hellenistic fort and temples of Greek Ikaros, low ruins that reward a morning visit and mainland museum context.
Sa'ad and Sae'ed Archaeological Site
Bronze Age Dilmun settlement and temple remains, the oldest layer in Failaka's 4,000 years of settlement.
Failaka Heritage Village
Reconstructed pre-oil Kuwaiti village with museum, craft shops, pool and the island's main restaurant.
Sheikh Abdullah Al-Salem Palace Museum
Restored ruler's palace inside the Heritage Village, the best interior on pre-1990 island life.
Al Zor Abandoned Village
Houses emptied in 1990 and never reoccupied, seen respectfully from the road only, never entered.
Where to stay in Failaka Island
Zoor
the only overnight base on the island
Heritage Village, Ikaros Hotel, restaurant and pool all sit here, a short drive from the harbour.
Think twice about
- Al Zor Abandoned Village interiors
Decaying, unstable houses emptied in 1990. View from the road only, discreetly, and never enter.
- Off-track and military-use ground
Parts of the island remain in military use. Stay on roads and marked paths, obey signage, and never pick up metal objects, because of the unexploded weapons risk.
- Failaka Heritage Village beach for swimming
Soft, unstable ground underfoot is described by visitors as risky. Swim at Wanasa Beach or in the village pool instead.
Best restaurants in Failaka Island
Failaka Heritage Village Restaurant
The island's main sit-down table, serving Kuwaiti and oriental grills, biryani and appetisers.
Ikaros Hotel Restaurant
Simple hotel food, drinks and breakfast, the second string when the village restaurant is closed.
Failaka Heritage Village Coffee Shop
Coffee, tea and simple snacks inside the village, the cheap tier for a Failaka day.
Outdoor things to do in Failaka Island
Wanasa Beach
The island's managed beach and the right place to swim, with loungers and activities in season.
Kayaking and Paddle Boating at Wanasa Beach
Calm lagoon kayaking and paddle boats, bundled into seasonal day packages at Wanasa Beach.
Horse Riding on Failaka Island
Short rides offered through the Heritage Village and day packages, a winter family add-on.
Cycling on Failaka Island
Flat, near-empty island roads linking harbour, village and ruins, best cycled in winter.
Failaka Heritage Village Swimming Pool
The island's most reliable swim, since the Heritage Village beach itself is poor for swimming.
Private Boat Charter to Failaka Island
Chartering a private boat from Marina Crescent buys flexible timings and the crossing as part of the day.
Best hotels in Failaka Island
Ikaros Hotel
The island's only conventional hotel, by the Heritage Village, simple resort standard not luxury.
Failaka Heritage Village Heritage Houses
Traditional courtyard houses rented whole inside the village, cheapest per head for groups and families.

Is Failaka Island safe?

- Stay on roads and marked paths, never enter abandoned buildings, and do not touch metal objects, because of the unexploded weapons risk.
- Alcohol is prohibited and emergency number is 112. Carry water, medication and your passport on your person.
Failaka Island travel tips: tourist traps to skip
- Do not trust a printed ferry timetable from an old blog. Operators, times and jetties change.
- Do not expect a finished resort island or a great natural swimming beach. Neither exists here.
- Do not go in summer for the cheap room. Heat above 45C closes the island outdoors down.
Getting around Failaka Island: public transport and more
- Public ferry from Ras Al Ard in Salmiya, fast and package boats from Marina Crescent. Confirm which jetty your ticket uses.
- Sailings run a few times a day, not hourly, and can cancel for weather. Book ahead in season and reconfirm the return the day before.
- On the island there is no visitor bus network or reliable ride-hailing. A package with the island bus tour is the low-friction default.
