Things to do in Elmina
And where to stay, the best time to visit, what a day costs, and the traps to skip.
Best time to visit Elmina
• a note or something on ✦ an occasion worth the trip
Long dry season, the best window: reliable roads, clearest light, full resort operation, possible harmattan haze in December to February.
Main rains, peaking in May and June: heavy downpours, humidity, rough sea and weather-checked excursions; the season to avoid for a first visit.
Bakatue opens the fishing season in early July, then the cooler August dry break; harbour and fish market at their most active.
Second, shorter rains easing toward November, with Cape Coast's Fetu Afahye in early September; workable with a spare half day.
What's on
- Edina Bakatue Festival First Tuesday of July and the week around it

- Oguaa Fetu Afahye First Saturday of September
Cape Coast's thanksgiving and cleansing festival with Asafo companies and a grand durbar, an easy day trip east from Elmina.
- Edina Bronya First Thursday to Saturday in January

Where to stay in Elmina
Near the castle and old town
history first trips, walkers, short stays
Walk to the castle at opening time, eat in town and be in Elmina after dark, trading a beach and most pools for position.
Beach resorts west of town, toward Brenu
beach and pool stays, couples, families, groups
Sand, pools and resort quiet a short drive west of the castle, with taxis in and out of Elmina and the sea as scenery.
Think twice about
- Isolated stretches of beach west of town after dark
Unlit, empty and away from help. Use the beach by day and taxi between resorts and town at night.
- Elmina Fishing Harbour after dark
A dimly lit working harbour with crowds by day and few people at night. Visit in the morning or late afternoon.

Is Elmina safe?
- The violent-incident and restricted areas are in Ghana's far north, hundreds of kilometres from Elmina; the central coast is not a restricted area.
- Keep phones and cameras secured in harbour crowds; taxi after dark rather than walking the coast road or isolated beaches.
- Do not swim out in the Gulf surf: strong rips, heavy shore break and no reliable lifeguards. Use hotel pools and lagoon water.
- Police 191 or 112, ambulance 193 or 112; serious medical care is Cape Coast first, then Accra, with evacuation insurance advised.
Elmina travel tips: tourist traps to skip
- Harbour tout pressure: agree any guide or boat price and duration before setting off, and do not accept items pressed into your hand.
- Printed prices that change at the bill: confirm the price of fish and specials when you order.
- Day-tripping the castle in a rushed hour from Accra and missing the town, the harbour and St Jago entirely.
Getting around Elmina: public transport and more
- Shared taxis and trotros run Elmina to Cape Coast all day for small money; agree private taxi fares before departure, there are no meters.
- The castle, harbour, cemetery and old town are walkable in cooler hours; the west beach resorts are taxi rides.
- From Accra, take an STC or VIP coach to Cape Coast then a taxi west, or a private car for comfort; leave Accra early.
