Things to do in Elba Island
And where to stay, the best time to visit, what a day costs, and the traps to skip.
Best time to visit Elba Island
• a note or something on ✦ an occasion worth the trip
Quiet to the point of closure outside Portoferraio. Superb hiking on clear days, lowest prices, no beach holiday.
Walkers and cyclists season. Wildflowers, the Butterfly Sanctuary at its best, cool sea and everything reopening.
Best all round month alongside September. Warm sea, longest days and beaches busy mainly at weekends.
Peak season. Everything open and every festival, with ferry queues, parking pressure and prices well above June.
Locals favourite. Sea stays warm into October, crowds thin from mid September and harvest and chestnut festivals begin.

Is Elba Island safe?
- Elba has no base to avoid for street homelessness, open drug use or personal safety reasons. Towns feel safe to walk at night in season.
- Real risks are winding roads and drink driving, rocky sea entries and unsupervised free beaches, and heat on Capanne and GTE hikes.
- Leave nothing visible in the car at isolated beach car parks, and watch unattended bags on crowded beaches.
Elba Island travel tips: tourist traps to skip
- Villa San Martino as a headline sight. Napoleon marketing is not the same as the Napoleon experience at Villa dei Mulini.
- Fetovaia in August at noon, and the town centre section of Marina di Campo beach in August.
- Day tripping Elba from the mainland. The minimum worthwhile stay is three nights, with five to seven as the sweet spot.
- Unnamed lungomare restaurants with photo menus and harbour touting in any town.
- Beach club umbrella and bed charges of 25 to 35 euros a day in August are normal. Almost every famous beach also has a free section.
Getting around Elba Island: public transport and more
- Arrive via Piombino Marittima by ferry to Portoferraio, Rio Marina or Cavo.
- Rent a car, or a scooter for confident couples, for stays of four days or more. Buses limit beach hopping and there is no Uber.
- Choose the smallest car that fits your group for hill lanes and beach parking, and park legally. Paid beach car parks cost less than a fine.
- Pick the sheltered side of the island for the day's wind, as locals do, rather than persevering on an exposed beach.
