Best time to visit Dungarvan
• a note or something on ✦ an occasion worth the trip
Best months, when the Greenway, beaches, gardens and seasonal kitchens are all running at once.

The connoisseur pick, with a still warm sea, families gone and restaurants bookable again.
Quiet and often fine, but Lismore Castle Gardens close in mid October and the castle season winds down.

- Swim at lifeguarded Clonea in season and respect tides on the Cunnigar spit and Copper Coast coves.
- Carry layers and water in the Comeraghs, as weather at Mahon Falls changes fast.
- Drive the narrow lanes to Mahon Falls, Ring and the Copper Coast slowly, expecting tractors and cyclists.
- The emergency number in Ireland is 112.
Dungarvan travel tips: tourist traps to skip
- Dungarvan Castle is a fine free hour, not a half day fortress, and Lismore Castle interior never opens.
- Most visitors enjoy the Greenway to Durrow more than grinding out the full 46km and a bus ride back.
- Clonea gets crowded on hot August Sundays, so go early or walk east along the sand for space.
- Several top kitchens close on Mondays and Tuesdays, so plan big dinners for Wednesday to Sunday.
Getting around Dungarvan: public transport and more
- There is no train station in Dungarvan, so arrive by Bus Eireann or Dublin Coach bus from Waterford or Cork to Davitts Quay.
- The centre, Abbeyside, the castle and all listed restaurants are within a 15 minute walk of each other.
- Clonea, Ring, Ardmore, Lismore and Mahon Falls need a car, a bike or a taxi, as local buses are infrequent.
- The Greenway causeway makes Clonea an easy cycle from town, and hire shops will deliver bikes.
