Things to do in Derry
And where to stay, the best time to visit, what a day costs, and the traps to skip.
Best time to visit Derry
• a note or something on ✦ an occasion worth the trip
Coldest, wettest and darkest, with the lowest hotel prices of the year. Museums and pubs carry the trip.
The smart window. Longer evenings, the driest season, and the Jazz Festival around the May Day weekend.
Maritime high summer, with the Foyle Maritime Festival on the riverfront and the longest days of the year.
Warmest and busiest, and the marching season calendar. Check parade and bonfire dates before booking.
The connoisseur month. Crowds and prices fall, light is good, and golf and hiking are often at their best.
Halloween month. Europe largest Halloween festival fills the city at the end of October and rooms sell out.
Dark, cheap and local. Christmas markets and pantomime, and the city returned to its residents.
What's on
- Derry Halloween 28-31 October
Billed as Europe largest Halloween festival, with the Awakening the Walled City trail, a carnival parade and fireworks.

Ireland biggest jazz festival, with hundreds of performances in bars, streets and the Millennium Forum.
- Foyle Maritime Festival Summer, usually late June or July
Tall ships, a food village and fireworks on the River Foyle, attracting over 100,000 visitors.
- St Patrick's Day and Spring Carnival 17 March
The one bright spike in the quiet season, with a city parade and carnival programme.
Worth the trip for
Best things to do in Derry
Derry City Walls
A complete mile of 17th century ramparts you can walk in full, with the whole modern city explained from the top.
Museum of Free Derry
The civil rights and Bloody Sunday story told by the Bogside community itself, yards from where it happened.
Bogside Murals
A dozen gable end murals recording civil rights, Bloody Sunday and the peace process, best understood with a local guide.
Free Derry Corner
The surviving gable wall from 1969 that anchors the Bogside, repainted for decades and still the symbol of the area.
Tower Museum
Derry long story from St Columba to the Armada and Derry Girls, finished with the best roof view inside the walls.
Guildhall
A free to enter civic showpiece whose stained glass tells the city story, five minutes from the walls and bridge.
Peace Bridge
The curving footbridge linking Cityside and Waterside, best walked by day and again lit up after dark.
St Columb's Cathedral
The first post Reformation Anglican cathedral in these islands, with a chapter house full of Siege relics.
Where to stay in Derry
Inside the Walls and the Cathedral Quarter
first trip, all round base
The walls, museums, theatre and best restaurants within a five minute walk, in the city most historic streets.
Ebrington and the Waterside
space, views and quieter nights
Across the Peace Bridge from the Guildhall, with the big spa hotel, the brewery square and easy parking.
Cityside quays and Strand Road
value and families
Riverfront chain hotels five to ten minutes from the walls, with a pool at the City Hotel and breakfast included at the budget end.
The Bogside and Brandywell
immersion in the city story
Guesthouses minutes from the murals and the Museum of Free Derry, on residential streets rather than a hotel quarter.
Think twice about
- The Fountain and Bishop Street interface
Historic interface streets at the walls western edge. Residential rather than a base, and parade routes bring closures here in season.
- Outer residential estates (Galliagh, Shantallow, outer Creggan)
No visitor infrastructure and a taxi ride to everything. Families live here happily, but a visitor spends the trip travelling in and out.
- Strand Road and Waterloo Street front rooms
Derry late night axis. Not a safety problem, a noise one, especially in a front room on a Friday or Saturday night.

Is Derry expensive? What a day costs
| Budget | £55 a person |
|---|---|
| Classic | £115 a person |
| Splurge | £260 a person |
A day of food, drink, sights and getting around, before the room
What to book ahead
- Millennium Forum: weeks ahead
- Giant's Causeway: a few days ahead
- Royal Portrush Golf Club: months ahead
- Portstewart Golf Club: months ahead
- Bishop's Gate Hotel: weeks ahead
- Shipquay Boutique Hotel: weeks ahead
- The Ebrington Hotel: weeks ahead
- Browns Bonds Hill: weeks ahead
- For Halloween, book central rooms 6 to 12 months ahead. Festival occupancy was reported around 96 percent in 2025.
- Book rooms early for the Jazz and Foyle Maritime weekends, plus headline Millennium Forum concerts.
- Royal Portrush needs months for Dunluce tee times and Portstewart Strand weeks to months, with handicap evidence.
- Reserve Browns Bonds Hill and Shipquay at weekends, and Mekong any night because the room is small.
Is Derry safe?
- Check the calendar in July and mid August for parades, bonfires, road closures and a heavier police presence.
- Interface streets are residential, not sights. Do not seek them out after dark or in parade periods, and do not touch flags or murals.
- Never swim in the fast tidal Foyle. At Atlantic beaches, swim at lifeguarded spots in season and respect flags.
- Hill weather on Binevenagh and in the Sperrins changes in minutes. Boots, waterproofs and an offline map are not optional.
Derry travel tips: tourist traps to skip
- Causeway tours that give you 45 minutes at the stones and hours in gift shops. Take the cliff path and do Dunluce slowly.
- The Dark Hedges sold as a headline attraction. It is a 10 minute photo stop en route, not a destination.
- One night Derry. The city needs two nights minimum, one for the Cityside story and one for a coast or Inishowen day.
- Coming only for Derry Girls and skipping the Museum of Free Derry, the thing Derry does best.
Getting around Derry: public transport and more
- Walk the centre. The walled city, Bogside, Guildhall and Ebrington are a compact, hilly cluster.
- The station is in the Waterside. Walk over the Craigavon Bridge in 10 to 15 minutes or use the centre shuttle.
- Ride the Derry to Coleraine train on the seaward side, then change for the Causeway Rambler bus to the Causeway.
- A car unlocks Inishowen, the Sperrins and the full Causeway day. Tell the hire company you will cross the border.
