Things to do in Dahlak Islands
And where to stay, the best time to visit, what a day costs, and the traps to skip.
Best time to visit Dahlak Islands
• a note or something on ✦ an occasion worth the trip
Cool season, the best window: Massawa highs in the low 30s, camp nights manageable, sea at its coolest and still warm.
Cooling second window, sea still warmest, October still very hot in Massawa so early starts apply.
Warming with shrinking margins: March and April workable with water discipline, May is the hot edge.
Extreme heat, avoid: Massawa highs roughly 37 to 41 degrees and no clinic offshore.
Best things to do in Dahlak Islands
Dahlak Marine National Park
Protected Red Sea reefs and island waters with turtles, dugongs, sharks and dense fish, reached only by operator boat.
Dahlak Kebir
The main island: a fishing village, an old necropolis and cisterns, and the historic centre of Red Sea pearl fishing.
Nakura
A prison island under Italian and Ethiopian rule, with a Soviet naval past, understood from history and never a landing.
Madote Island
A low sandbank islet with an old lighthouse, visited on Dissei boat days for swimming and snorkelling off the sand.
Where to stay in Dahlak Islands
Massawa
gateway base for every Dahlak boat
Harbour, operators, permits and the only verified hotel beds for nights before and after sailing.
Dissei Island
one overnight island camp
The island current programmes camp on, with full board and water carried in by the operator boat.
Dahlak Kebir
only if an operator confirms access and lodging that month
The main island, with villages and history, but access has been closed at times and its hotel may not be operating.
Think twice about
- Dahlak Kebir as a walk in base
Its island hotel may not be operating and the island has been closed to tourists at times. Go only once an operator confirms.
- Remote islands outside an operator plan
Certain remote islands are not accessible to tourists, and offshore there is no water, shelter, signal or rescue.
- Land within 25 km of Eritrea's land borders
Landmines are a risk in border areas and the border strip is tense and effectively closed to visitors. No pick is near it.

Outdoor things to do in Dahlak Islands

The standard Dahlak island in current programmes: white sand, a fishing village, reef snorkelling and a tented camp.
Dahlak Reef Snorkelling
Reef snorkelling over coral heads off the operator boat, with turtles, rays and dense, unafraid fish in clear water.
Dahlak Scuba Diving
Intact walls, wrecks and mantas for experienced divers, with almost no dive industry and no chamber within useful reach.
Multi-Day Island Camping and Boat Cruising
Nights in a tented beach camp or on an operator boat, moving between permitted islands on full board.
Seabird Islands and Mangrove Shores
An Important Bird Area of nesting seabirds, mangrove edges and salt brush shores, watched from an operator boat.
Best hotels in Dahlak Islands
Dahlak Hotel
The Massawa gateway ceiling on Tualud Island, at the harbour where Dahlak boats and captains are arranged.
Gurgusum Beach Hotel
A beach base outside central Massawa, for a calmer night and a mainland swim on a non boat day.
Central Hotel
A basic central Massawa hotel with a seaside terrace, carried on an old traveller record as good value.
Red Sea Hotel
A listed Massawa fallback hotel, named for an operator to confirm and check, with no facilities promised here.

Is Dahlak Islands safe?
- Heat is a medical risk offshore: carry more water than the plan states, cover up, and do no midday walking in summer.
- No recompression chamber was verified within useful reach. Dive shallow and conservative, with evacuation insurance, or snorkel instead.
- Do not photograph military, government, port or naval subjects, and carry passport, visa and permits on every boat day.
Dahlak Islands travel tips: tourist traps to skip
- Assuming Dahlak Kebir is open, a dive centre or chamber exists, or the Luul hotel can be booked, because old references say so.
- Taking a cheaper unpermitted boat from the quay, and trusting any Eritrea hotel or restaurant listing without a human reconfirmation that month.
Getting around Dahlak Islands: public transport and more
- Asmara to Massawa by permitted road, then everywhere by operator boat. There is no island airport, tourist ferry or independent island hopping.
- A travel permit is needed beyond 25 km from Asmara, and a separate Dahlak permission must be arranged in advance through an operator or travel agent.
