The trough, grey and damp with the Ethnographic Park closed and few events.
Christmas Market in Unirii Square makes December atmospheric and good value.
Properly cold with snow common, the city retreats to cafes, opera and indoor museums.

- Iris / Dâmbul Rotund and the Gara station strip
Industrial and rail side streets that are shabby and empty at night, with no reason to sleep there over Centru.
- Airport road, Traian Vuia / Someșeni

Is Cluj-Napoca safe?
- Cluj is a safe university city with low violent crime and a populated lit centre late at night.
- Watch for pickpockets in crowded festival and transport settings and overcharging by unmetered taxis.
- Keep hold of your drink in the rowdy Piezisa student strip, as in any party district.
- Keep to lit main streets late, with extra care around the station forecourt and Calea Motilor.
- Do not wander Hoia Baciu alone at night, do the guided tour instead. Emergency number 112.
Cluj-Napoca travel tips: tourist traps to skip
- Baracca is permanently closed, any itinerary leading with it is out of date.
- Floresti apartments marketed as Cluj are the accommodation trap that actually bites.
- The Turda plus Corvin plus Alba triple day is highlights and car time, not depth at any one site.
- Bran Castle is near Brasov hours away and is not a Cluj day trip, Sighisoara is the honest Dracula link.
- Iulius Mall is a good modern mall, not a reason to cross the city on a short trip.
- During UNTOLD Central Park closes and centre prices peak, either attend properly or change dates.
- Romania uses the leu RON not the euro, use bank ATMs and choose charge in RON.
Getting around Cluj-Napoca: public transport and more
- Walk the compact flat centre, almost everything is within 20 minutes of Unirii.
- Airport is 8 km east: bus A1 or trolleybus is cheap, Bolt, Uber or a metered taxi takes 20 to 30 minutes.
- Buy CTP bus and tram tickets before boarding and validate, inspectors do check.
- Rent a car only for Apuseni and self driven Rimetea or Alba days, it is a liability in the centre.
- Do not take the train to Turda, the station is in Campia Turzii about 10 km away, use bus or car.
