And where to stay, the best time to visit, what a day costs, and the traps to skip.
Best time to visit Chuuk
• a note or something on ✦ an occasion worth the trip
Dry season and best diving window, less rain, calmer seas and best chance of clearer visibility. Peak season, book ahead.
Shoulder into wetter months, more rain and humidity, quieter wrecks and reasonable value if afternoons are wet.
Wettest and most unsettled, heaviest rain often around Oct and Nov, regional typhoon season, spare days needed for boats and flights.
Around 17 Feb, the Operation Hailstone anniversary is marked by divers and historians, not a public festival. Book early.

Think twice about
- Weno town centre and unlit roads at night
Crime rates are significantly higher in Chuuk, incidents have included assaults on visitors, crime increases at night and alcohol often plays a role. Stay indoors after dark, there are few streetlights, and do not walk the streets at night.
- Private and village land without permission
Land in Chuuk is customary and private. Do not step onto private property without landowner permission. Go with a guide and ask first.

Is Chuuk safe?
- Crime is significantly higher in Chuuk than elsewhere in the Federated States of Micronesia: be extra vigilant, stay on public roads and in public venues, limit travel at night and stay indoors after dark.
- Drink bottled or hotel treated water, carry dive and medical evacuation insurance, and bring all medicines and dive spares, as hospital care on Weno is limited to basic treatment and stabilisation.
- Never snorkel or dive alone, stay inside the lagoon for snorkelling, and do not dive on your flying day.
Chuuk travel tips: tourist traps to skip
- Budget the $50 Chuuk dive permit, 5% Chuuk tax and an airport departure fee in cash, as bundling varies by operator.
- Do not remove or move wreck artefacts, touch human remains or live ordnance, or enter wrecks without training, a guide and a plan.
- Alcohol is served at hotel and liveaboard bars only in practice, rules vary by municipality, and there is no bar street or party scene.
Getting around Chuuk: public transport and more
- Fly in on United Island Hopper or Guam flights to Chuuk International Airport (TKK) on Weno and build in a buffer night for delays.
- There are no public buses on Weno. Shared taxis on the main road cost about $1 to $2, and lagoon travel is by boat arranged through hotels and operators.
