Best time to visit Chisinau
• a note or something on ✦ an occasion worth the trip
Best months: parks at full green, 20 to 27C, opera still in season and no festival crowds.
Mid September to mid October is the single best window, with harvest, golden parks, Wine Day and City Day.
Shoulder: April is cooler and cheaper, still pleasant for walking.
December works for the Christmas market if you dress for it, with very cheap winter hotel rates.
Worst months: genuinely cold at minus 5 to minus 15C, short grey days and icy pavements.
High summer heat at 30 to 38C, opera dark and locals on holiday, partly offset by lake beach and terraces.
Grey, muddy and pre Christmas, the locals' least favourite month. Go only for the prices.

- Real risks are pickpocketing in markets, transport and bars, and car break ins if valuables are visible.
- Travel in pairs at night in unlit park areas, keep your card in sight, and pay restaurant staff directly.
- Never photograph military or government installations. Carry a passport copy and dial 112 for emergencies.
Chisinau travel tips: tourist traps to skip
- Castel Mimi premium upsells. Confirm the exact package price in writing before you go.
- Platform marked up winery tours. The same day costs less through established local operators.
- MallDova and generic shopping are a poor use of a Moldova day.
- Unlicensed Transnistria fixers offering to smooth a checkpoint for cash. Use a known operator or do not go.
- Airport currency exchange and unmetered taxis without a fixed price agreed first.
Getting around Chisinau: public transport and more
- Walk Centru, where most sights, hotels and restaurants fit inside a 20 minute radius.
- Use Yandex Go ride hailing for airport and cross town runs, and confirm the app price first.
- Trolleybuses and buses are frequent and cost a few leu. The No. 30 trolleybus is the classic airport to centre run.
- Do not self drive in the city or between wineries. Hire a car and driver or take a tour for countryside days.
