Things to do in Cagliari
And where to stay, the best time to visit, what a day costs, and the traps to skip.
Best time to visit Cagliari
• a note or something on ✦ an occasion worth the trip
Best overall, May for Sant'Efisio and warming days, September for the warmest sea with crowds gone.
Excellent if booked ahead, hotter with beach season in full swing and prices rising.
Mild and ideal for hiking the Sella, Sette Fratelli and Monte Arcosu, with cheaper rooms.
Worst for value, peak heat, prices and traffic to Chia and Villasimius, with Ferragosto crowds.
Low season, quiet museums and lowest prices for food and history travellers who accept no swimming.
What's on
- Festa di Sant'Efisio 1-4 May
Sardinia's most important procession since 1657, from Stampace to Nora and back over four days.
- Sa Die de sa Sardigna 28 April
Sardinia Day with concerts and cultural programming, a good shoulder to Sant'Efisio.
- Cagliari Carnival February/March
Parades, costumes and street food in the centre, smaller than Venice and more local.
- Summer evening concerts June-September
Open air concerts at the Bastione, the Amphitheatre and Poetto kiosks, plus village feste in the south.
- Autumn food and wine sagre September-November
Harvest season village festivals in the Campidano inland, mostly word of mouth rather than ticketed.
Best things to do in Cagliari
Castello Quarter
The walled hilltop citadel of limestone lanes, cathedral and towers, with sudden sea views at every turn.
Bastione di Saint Remy
Monumental terrace above the port with the classic panorama over the Golfo degli Angeli, best at sunset.
Mercato Civico di San Benedetto
Two floor covered market where Cagliari shops for tuna, bottarga, pecorino and culurgiones, best before lunch.
Museo Archeologico Nazionale di Cagliari
Nuragic bronzes and the Mont'e Prama Giants that make Barumini and Nora mean far more afterwards.
Roman Amphitheatre of Cagliari
Second century rock cut amphitheatre above Stampace, intimate and strange for being carved from limestone.
Orto Botanico di Cagliari
One of Italy's oldest botanical gardens, with palms and deep shade for a hot morning loop with the amphitheatre.
Villa di Tigellio
Roman residential remains by the amphitheatre and gardens, worth a look from outside on the Stampace loop.
Parco Regionale Molentargius - Saline
Wetland park five minutes from the centre where greater flamingos breed among salt pans and herons.
Where to stay in Cagliari
Marina
first trip, all-round base
Flat base below Castello by the port and station, with the densest dining and an easy bus to Poetto.
Stampace
value and local feel
Residential quarter west of Marina with trattorias and workshops, walkable to the station and sights.
Castello
couples, atmosphere, short stays
Sleep inside the medieval citadel for dawn views and quiet nights, with steep climbs and few restaurants.
Villanova
quiet central base, local feel
Colourful low rise streets around Piazza San Domenico, with small bars and a village feel near Marina.
Poetto / Marina Piccola
beach first summer stays
Wake to a swim and cycle the promenade in summer, with a 15 to 20 minute bus ride for city sights.
San Benedetto / Bonaria
drivers and road trip bases
Residential and market side with easier parking and modern hotels, a 15 to 20 minute walk to the centre.
Think twice about
- Cagliari central station and Via Roma western end
Gritty station blocks that are shuttered at night with petty pickpocket risk. Book 2 to 3 blocks east into Marina instead.
- Sant'Elia / San Bartolomeo periphery
Residential social housing district beyond Poetto with no visitor infrastructure and poor late night transport. No reason to base there.
- SS195 and airport industrial strips, Elmas and Sestu
Soulless highway motels sold on price. You pay the saving back in taxis and lose every evening in town.

- Poetto beach club front row premiums in August for water that Chia and Villasimius do better.
