Is Bridgetown safe?
- Barbados is one of the safer Caribbean islands for visitors. Violent crime against tourists is rare; the main risk is petty theft from beaches and rental cars. Do not leave valuables visible in a parked car, keep bags zipped on crowded ZR vans, and use normal night-time sense in Bridgetown after dark. Emergency: police 211, fire 311, ambulance 511.
Bridgetown travel tips: tourist traps to skip
- Cruise-terminal duty-free shopping is fine for rum, overpriced for everything else; buy souvenirs at local craft markets.
- Beach vendors selling free bracelets and aloe massages: a firm no thank you works.
- The cheapest island tours are long hot coach days; pay for the small-group version.
- Sargassum hits the east and sometimes south coast in summer; check before booking an east-coast stay.
Getting around Bridgetown: public transport and more
- ZR vans, blue buses and route taxis charge a flat BBD 3.50 (about US$1.75) to anywhere on the island.
- Taxis are not metered but run to government zone rates; agree BBD or USD before setting off.
- Rental cars (around US$45-80 per day) open up the east coast and north properly. Drive on the left.
- Bridgetown itself is walkable: the Careenage, the synagogue and the museum quarter are all on foot.
