Things to do in Bangui
And where to stay, the best time to visit, what a day costs, and the traps to skip.
Best time to visit Bangui
• a note or something on ✦ an occasion worth the trip
The dry season and the window: roads most passable, December to February driest, Boali Falls running thinner.
The shoulder: heat peaks, storms build and rainfall climbs steeply through April, and Boali begins to fill.
The rainy season: August wettest at about 228 mm, roads degrade, Boali at full force, Dzanga logistics hardest.
What's on
- Republic Day 1 December
Anniversary of the proclamation of the Central African Republic on 1 December 1958, the national day in Bangui.
- Boganda Day 29 March
National memorial day for Barthelemy Boganda, who died on 29 March 1959, months before independence.
Best things to do in Bangui
Notre-Dame of Bangui Cathedral
The red brick cathedral of 1937 where Pope Francis opened a holy door in 2015, the defining building of the centre.
Boganda National Museum
The national museum of 3,500 artefacts, closed since 2013 to 2014 with its collection crated, awaiting reopening.
Marché Central
The central market at PK0, where the produce of the river and the Lobaye meets the cloth trade of a whole country.
Grande Mosquée de Bangui
The city's principal mosque, an exterior and context visit that balances the cathedral in any honest Bangui day.
Centre Artisanal
The artisan centre on every operator itinerary, for wood carving, woven goods and the country's butterfly art.
Barthélemy Boganda Stadium
The national stadium named for Boganda, worth a pick on match day when the home crowd is the city at its happiest.
Palais de la Renaissance
The presidential palace on the Plateau, viewed from a distance only, the landmark that explains the city's layout.
Monument Barthélemy Boganda
A modest memorial to the republic's founder, a short stop whose weight is in Boganda's story, told by your guide.
Where to stay in Bangui
Avenue de l'Independance and the Plateau
first future-window stay
The Ledger Plaza, cathedral, ministries and embassies cluster here, the most orderly and guarded ground in the country.
Riverfront, Boulevard du General de Gaulle
the river setting
The Oubangui Hotel's ground, with the port, the promenade and the Congo view a short drive from PK0.
City centre around PK0
value and texture
The simple hotels stand near the market and cathedral in ordinary Bangui, basic facilities at a large saving.
Bimbo
not a base while current warnings stand
The Quatre Saison stands here, but Bimbo carries stronger warnings than Bangui itself, so it is not a base in current conditions.
Think twice about
- Outside Bangui by road without an operator
Armed groups control large areas, landmines are recorded outside the capital, and movement beyond the capital runs under strict security rules.
- Bimbo, Begoua and Coline as bases
These Bangui edge areas carry stronger warnings than Bangui itself.
- KM5 without local guidance
A district with a recent history of communal violence that sheltered many of the city's Muslims; enter only guided, in daylight, with a reason.
Best restaurants in Bangui
Le Relais des Chasses
Bangui's best documented restaurant, French cooking with local flair on a garden terrace, at the city's top prices.
5 Fourchettes
The city's Indian led dining room at PK0, a huge mixed menu and delivery service its regulars relied on.
Cafrina
The local food reference among named dining rooms, for brochettes of capitaine, giant shrimps and cassava sides.
SANGO
The Italian listing in the expatriate dining circuit, one of the better scores in the city's thin restaurant record.
La Brasserie
A French brasserie and live music venue open to 23:00, the closest thing Bangui has to a documented night out.
L'Avenue Restaurant & Pâtisserie
The documented patisserie stop, coffee and pastries at one of the best scores in the city's restaurant listings.
Chez Mama Mado
A barbecue spot known from a single active listing, standing for the maquis grill tier the online record barely touches.
Outdoor things to do in Bangui
Oubangui Riverfront
The riverbank walk along the boulevard, port, pirogues and the Congo across the water, best at the end of the day.
Oubangui River pirogue cruise
A motorised pirogue out on the Oubangui toward the rapids that named the city, river life passing at eye level.
Chutes de Boali
A falls about 50 metres high and 250 wide on the Mbali River, the one great day trip, 95 to 100 km from Bangui.
Mbaiki and the Lobaye
Coffee country 107 km south west, a forest road day via the Bossongo Aka encampment to Mbaiki town and its falls.
Dzanga-Sangha Reserve
Dzanga Bai's elephant clearing and habituated lowland gorillas at Bayanga, a charter flight expedition, not a day trip.
Best hotels in Bangui
Ledger Plaza Bangui
The city's only true luxury hotel, 156 rooms with pool and gardens, international prices and a mixed record.
Oubangui Hotel
The historic river hotel of 1985 facing the Congo, character and terrace setting over dated rooms and upkeep.
Quatre Saison Hotel Bangui
A small Bimbo hotel with the city's best guest score, live only in a window where Bimbo's status changes.
Hotel du Centre
The old 72 room centre workhorse near market and cathedral, the best cheap position with a mixed upkeep record.
Kitika Hotel
The simple hotel specialist operators base Bangui nights on, expedition tested rather than leisure polished.

Is Bangui safe?
- Leisure travel is not currently possible; armed groups, landmines and violent crime govern movement, and help in an emergency is severely limited.
- Never photograph the palace, checkpoints, military, police or the airport, and ask before photographing anyone.
- Malaria is present year round, a yellow fever certificate is required on arrival, and tap water is not drinkable.
- Keep night movement driver based and short, carry ID for checkpoints, and comply promptly and politely.
Bangui travel tips: tourist traps to skip
- Do not buy or eat bushmeat from protected species, including at the PK12 market named in one tour itinerary.
- Unlicensed guiding offers at the airport contradict the operator structure every serious source describes.
- Any source describing the Boganda Museum as an ordinary open museum is out of date by more than a decade.
Getting around Bangui: public transport and more
- A vetted driver arranged by your operator or hotel is the transport plan, in the city and on road days.
- Bangui M'Poko Airport is north west of the centre; the centre, cathedral, market and stadium form a compact cluster.
- Boali is about 95 to 100 km north west on the paved RN1 and Mbaiki about 107 km south west.
- Yellow taxis and motorcycle taxis suit guided daytime hops between centre sights, not road days or night movement.
