Things to do in Atauro Island
And where to stay, the best time to visit, what a day costs, and the traps to skip.
Best time to visit Atauro Island
• a note or something on ✦ an occasion worth the trip
Dry season core: calmest crossings, best visibility, dry tracks and every operator open; book ahead around Saturday ferries.
The sweet spot: tail of the dry season with the pygmy blue whale migration beginning in the strait.
Whale season at its height but the wet season starts: rougher crossings and occasional cancellations, so hold spare days.
Wet season: hot, humid, rough seas, muddy tracks and the highest cancellation risk; go only with flexible dates and a Dili buffer day.
What's on
- Whale watching season October to December
Pygmy blue whales, sperm whales and dolphin pods migrate through the Ombai-Wetar Strait past Atauro.
- Beloi Saturday Market Every Saturday
The island's weekly market at Beloi, at its biggest when the morning ferry arrives from Dili.
Best things to do in Atauro Island
Beloi Market
The island market by Beloi pier, biggest on Saturdays when the ferry brings Dili traders and island villages meet.
Boneca de Atauro
A women's co-operative workshop in Vila making embroidered dolls, bags and homewares that support around 60 families.
Empreza Di'ak
A social enterprise shop in Beloi selling goods made on the island, the port village counterpart to Boneca in Vila.
Vila Maumeta
The island's quiet administrative village: church, grotto hill, the Boneca workshop and everyday island life at walking pace.
Where to stay in Atauro Island
Beloi
first trip, diving and logistics
The port village holds the pier, the Saturday market, the dive resort and most of the island's beds.
Vila Maumeta
quiet village stay and the mountain
The administrative village south of Beloi, with the Boneca workshop, the island's best restaurant and the Manukoko climb.
Think twice about
- Adara and the east and north coast villages as a base
No road access to Adara and only rough tracks or boats elsewhere, with a bed and meals only by prior arrangement. Visit as a day trip or one arranged night, and base in Beloi or Vila.
- Atauro as a same-day connection
Never rely on crossing back to Dili the day of an onward flight: wet season seas cancel boats and there is no Monday ferry, so hold a buffer day in Dili.

What to book ahead
- Atauro Dive Resort: weeks ahead
- Barry's Place: a few days ahead
- Mount Manukoko: a few days ahead
- Adara Village: a few days ahead
- Akrema Beach: a few days ahead

- Book your bed before you cross: the island has only a few dozen rooms and a Saturday ferry can fill them.
- Put dive days and any October to December whale trip early in the stay so wet or rough weather leaves a second chance.
Is Atauro Island safe?
- Medical care on Atauro is minimal and serious cases are evacuated by boat to Dili when the sea allows; carry insurance covering medical evacuation and scuba diving.
- Crime, including gang-related violence, robbery and assault, occurs in Timor-Leste, mostly at night; take care in remote areas, and check boats for enough life jackets before boarding.
- Check any boat for enough life jackets and never board an overloaded vessel; first responders cannot reach remote areas quickly.
- Dengue is present and there is no island pharmacy for prescriptions: use repellent and nets, and bring all medication in full plus a delay margin.
Atauro Island travel tips: tourist traps to skip
- Take every US dollar you need from Dili in small notes: there is no ATM or bank on Atauro, cards are not accepted, and pre-2009 notes are usually rejected.
- Older operator pages still show the old Thursday and Saturday only ferry pattern; the 2026 APORTIL timetable is wider, but confirm with APORTIL or your host a day or two ahead regardless.
Getting around Atauro Island: public transport and more
- Tuk-tuks link Beloi and Vila for small cash fares agreed before you ride; beyond that, walk, hire a vehicle on rough tracks, or take a local boat.
- Carry water on every leg and wear shoes, not flip-flops, on the Adara track and the Akrema road.
