Is Aneho safe?
- Togo's serious security warnings cover the far north and the Burkina Faso border, not Aneho on the south coast.
- Do not swim in the Atlantic at Aneho: strong undertow and sudden drop offs, with no formal ocean rescue service.
- Serious medical care means Lome, about an hour away, with payment expected up front, so carry travel and evacuation insurance.
- Avoid demonstrations and large political gatherings anywhere in Togo, and do not display valuables in markets or at ATMs.
Aneho travel tips: tourist traps to skip
- Unagreed shrine fees in Togoville and Glidji can be demanded at levels out of proportion to local incomes, so agree all fees in advance.
- Do not treat the Aneho beach as a swimming beach, however calm it looks from the shore.
- Do not photograph people, shrines or ceremonies in Glidji, Togoville or Vogan market without explicit permission.
Getting around Aneho: public transport and more
- Aneho is about 45 km east of Lome on the coastal road, roughly an hour by car depending on Lome traffic.
- Agree every shared taxi, zemidjan motorcycle taxi, boat and guide fare before you set off.
- For Vogan, Togoville via Agbodrafo and Glidji, hire a car with a local driver for the day.
