Things to do in Abidjan
And where to stay, the best time to visit, what a day costs, and the traps to skip.
Best time to visit Abidjan
• a note or something on ✦ an occasion worth the trip
Best: main dry season, harmattan brings drier air and late season dusty haze.
Good, warming up with first rains; FEMUA and Popo Carnival usually land in April.
Worst for a first trip: heaviest rains, flooding and maximum humidity.
A brief cooler, drier second window inside the rains; the uncrowded slot.
Mixed, improving through November; Abissa festival in Grand-Bassam in October or November.
What's on
- FEMUA April, one week
One of Africa's largest music festivals, centred on Anoumabo, Marcory, with free concerts.
- Popo Carnival Usually around Easter, in April; check dates
Aboure masks, parades and a royal procession in Bonoua, about 50 km east.
- MASA March-April in its editions
Big performing arts market festival; check your year.
- Abissa October/November, roughly two weeks
Nzima new year festival in Grand-Bassam, with masked processions, drumming and grievances aired and forgiven.

SOTRA Bateau Bus

Cathédrale Saint-Paul d'Abidjan
Aldo Spirito's modernist cathedral is the city's defining landmark, with mosaics, stained glass and a vast sloping form.

Maquis evening in Marcory Zone 4

Centre Artisanal de la Ville d'Abidjan (CAVA)
Dozens of stalls sell masks, carving, textiles and bronze from across the country under one roof; walk it all before bargaining.
Grand Marché de Treichville
Treichville's big market and streets show an older, denser Abidjan; visit by day with a guide or a clear purpose.
La Pyramide
Olivieri's hollow concrete ziggurat is the most interesting building in Plateau, best as a street level photo stop.
Hôtel Ivoire quarter, Cocody
Cocody's embassy avenues, lagoon terraces and Riviera offer the upscale contrast to Plateau, best by car at golden hour.
Where to stay in Abidjan
Cocody - Deux Plateaux / Riviera / Hôtel Ivoire quarter
best overall base
Upscale, greener embassy district with the widest choice of good hotels, cafes and restaurants by the lagoon.
Le Plateau
business and first night convenience
Skyline district with big hotels and the cathedral and museum on foot, but it empties after dark.
Marcory - Zone 4 / Biétry
food and nightlife, with eyes open
Restaurant streets and apart hotels near the airport where you can walk between dinner spots, unlike Cocody.
Grand-Bassam
one night add on
Sleep there for the beach and old town at dawn, not as a commuting base for Abidjan.
Think twice about
- Abobo
Named in security guidance for concentrated criminal activity; daytime with a local at most, not a base.
- Adjamé
Named in security guidance for concentrated criminal activity and roads to avoid on crime grounds.
- Yopougon
Famous for maquis and music but named for criminal concentration; visit daytime with a local, do not base here.
- Koumassi
Named in security guidance for concentrated criminal activity; no hotel stock worth the risk.

A day of food, drink, sights and getting around, before the room
What to book ahead
- Grand-Bassam: a few days ahead
- Ivoire Golf Club: a few days ahead
- Assinie-Mafia: a few days ahead
- Île Boulay: a few days ahead
- Basilique Notre-Dame de la Paix de Yamoussoukro: a few days ahead
- Ébrié Lagoon private boat: a few days ahead
- La Maison Palmier: weeks ahead
- Sofitel Abidjan Hôtel Ivoire: weeks ahead
- E-visa before travel and a yellow fever certificate are required for entry.
- Book top hotels early; Maison Palmier is small and conference weeks reprice the top tier.
- Book Grand Large, Maison Palmier's table, Kaiten and private day trip cars a few days ahead.
- Malaria is endemic; take prophylaxis, use repellent at dusk and drink bottled or filtered water.
- Learn basic French numbers, greetings and food words; English thins fast outside big hotels.
Is Abidjan safe?
- The northern border strip is the country's high-risk zone; do not improvise northern itineraries.
- Move by car at night and never walk over bridges after dark.
- Keep phones out of sight in markets and traffic; carry small notes and leave passports in the hotel safe.
- Avoid demonstrations and political crowds entirely.
- Women solo should expect persistent unwanted attention; a known driver and Cocody base help materially.
Abidjan travel tips: tourist traps to skip
- La Pyramide is a photo stop, not a visit inside.
- The zoo over Banco and Comoé as a day trip are mis-sells.
- Hotel only eating costs five times a maquis and pleases less.
- First price market asks at CAVA and Treichville can be multiples of the settling price.
- Photography at bridges, checkpoints and government or military sites is prohibited in practice.
- Do not swim casually in the ocean at Bassam or Assinie; surf and rips have drowned strong swimmers.
Getting around Abidjan: public transport and more
- You move by car; build days in one district as bridges can take over an hour at peak.
- Yango is the default ride hailing app; download it before arrival.
- Orange metered taxis are the street fallback; confirm meter or fare before moving.
- Use a hired car and driver for Bassam, Assinie and Yamoussoukro, and never drive intercity at night.
- The bateau bus is genuinely useful for Plateau to Treichville to Cocody hops in peak traffic.
